Empowering communities to lead the clean energy transition.
Hope in action for a healthier planet.
Green by Default is on a mission to protect our shared environment and mitigate climate change by helping communities make the switch to clean energy.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to do that is through the 100% renewable energy default, a simple policy tool with transformative impact. When entire populations are automatically enrolled in clean energy, it cuts emissions at scale and moves us faster toward a fossil-free future.

100% RENEWABLE ENERGY DEFAULT COMMUNITIES IN CALIFORNIA
Thanks to communities choosing to go Green by Default for their electricity, 3.5 million people across these diverse 39 cities and counties virtually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from their electricity supply. That's nearly 10% of California's population. We're reaching a critical mass and tipping point. This remarkable progress began in 2018 and has continued to pick up momentum. These communities are achieving clean energy targets decades ahead of the state's 2045 goal. Over 10 billion pounds of GHGs and $1 billion in social costs of carbon have been avoided as a result.*

* The social cost of carbon is the cost of damages created from one extra ton of carbon emissions. A 2015 Stanford University study puts the cost at $220 per ton. The GHGs and cost savings noted are for Clean Power Alliance member agencies from 2018-2023 and do not include other CCAs so actual savings are even greater.
The 100% renewable energy default is having profound effects. Learn how and why this is really moving the needle on clean energy!
We're making great progress, but have many more towns, cities, counties and states to go!
Help your community go Green by Default!
A BIG thank you to the local elected officials in our towns, cities and counties, who have voted to go to 100%!
